The days of pressing tofu under a tower of precariously balanced tins are over. Tofuture have created a unique and stylish Tofu Press that removes the water from unpressed tofu simply and effectively. Tofu is one of the most versatile, healthy and delicious foods around, but to get the most out of tofu you need to press it. The press is compact and easy to store (W14cm x D12cm x H7cm) and the outer tub can also be used as a container to marinade the pressed tofu.

How to make better and delicious tofu?

First, you need to “press” tofu. Here’s how:

Tofu is packed in water, and it’s a lot like a sponge — if you don’t press out the old water you can’t work in any new flavors. This is really easy; it just takes some advanced planning.

  1. Open a package of extra-firm, water-packed tofu (not the silken kind) and drain.
  2. Cut the tofu width-wise into slices — four or six should do it.
  3. Lay paper towels on a sheet pan and spread tofu slices in a single layer on top.
  4. Put more paper towels over the tofu, then another sheet pan over them.
  5. Place heavy objects on the sheet pan (try cookbooks or cans of tomatoes).
  6. Leave it alone for at least 30 minutes, but preferably a couple hours. You can leave it like this all day or night if you put it in the fridge. If you’re in a hurry, apply some manual pressure to cut the time to 15 min., but it won’t be quite as awesome.
  7. Uncover; leave as “tofu steaks” or cut into cubes, marinate, and cook accordingly.

Tofu Press Instructions

Step 1: Remove the tofu from the packaging and drain off any excess water

Step 2: Place the block into the inner tub, the green container with perforated holes

Step 3: Replace the lid, pull the elastic bands down around the hooks and push the handles down to impart a continuous pressure on the tofu.

Now leave the press in the fridge for the desired amount of time, you don’t need to return to the press to increase the pressure half-way through the pressing time. The longer you leave the tofu, the better it will be pressed. We recommend the following guideline pressing times depending on what you are making.

Short press, 15-30 mins – for ‘cheese’ sauce, ‘chocolate’ mousse or ‘cheese’cake
Medium press, 1-2 hours – for pasties, quiches and pies
Long press, 4 hours to overnight – for stir-fries, kebabs and baked tofu

When you’re ready to either marinate or cook your tofu, simply release the bands by opening the handles, remove the tofu and pour out the water. You’re ready to marinade, whiz, bake or fry your tofu.
